The Forgotten PowerPoint Essay
I wrote the following PowerPoint presentation way back in September of 2002, right before the judge for my case was chosen. If you read the book Being Had, you know all about this cool bit of detective work.
The situation was that my state appointed lawyers were doing nothing about defending me, or worse, were doing an excellent job of defending Tomas Zaremba, the cop who had tried to run me into a bus with his car. At the time, Zaremba had given three testimonies to the prosecutor, the last one with me in attendance and as of this moment two things were absolutely clear to me: I knew that Zaremba was lying, but now I understood that both my lawyer and the prosecutor knew this as well and that neither thought this of any legal consequence.
So I took it upon myself to try and make my case, not the case my lawyer was trying to argue, but my case, and it needed to be clear to whoever the judge might be. With the help of some friends I put together a 92-page report about the situation consisting of three essays and all the corresponding documents. The centerpiece was this PowerPoint collection of 30 slides. At the time, I knew that it could be possible that none of this was necessary because if the judge was not as obviously corrupt as the lawyers and the cops, he or she would already know that the case was a farce. I had mny doubts but my thinking was that you couldn’t argue the existence of something that was in print and staring you in the face. Especially when what was staring you in the face was actual physical evidence that Zaremba was a liar. I mean, they just couldn’t ignore that…
I think: Zaremba was a liar some 13 times or so right from the start, and specifically insofar as his two major points of accusation went: His teeth were not broken and the damage he claimed to have been done to his car was old. The proof of the first was in his medical report, the second is explained here.
The detective work that starts in after frame 23 when I started concentrating on trying to prove that the damages he was claiming even from the first report had been made previously. You could see from the pictures that there were streaks of dirt steaming backward from the little dents you could see in the pictures of the hood. These streaks are on all cars when they are driven in the rain. So I found the weather undergroundsite on the web. (plug in May 15th, 2002)
The page plainly said that it had only rained before our little to-do at the crossings, and after. And, because his interviews at the police station were time stamped, we know he was inside the police station giving his reports during the second rain.
So his claim that I had damaged his pristine car were false.
I turned in the report on October 7th, but of course, nothing happened. Officially, the report was never read and we proceeded to trial. I was first to give testimony and I repeated basically what I have written here: He drove his car into me when he drove around me, skidded to a stop just in front of me, causing me to have to ride into the bus, and I punched him for doing it.
I was not however allowed by the court in any way to address any testimonies made by Zaremba. This was made clear from the start that I was to stick specifically to my own account.
